BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Cartridge fixing tools have the advantage of potability, and of speed in operation. However in the wrong hands, they can main, If not kill and their effect is not necessarily confined to the firing area. In trained and competent hands these tools are safe.

HAZARDS

• Penetration of soft materials
• Ricochet where material is brittle or of an uneven consistency
• Splintering of material if brittle of glazed
• Noise depending upon the tool used and especially in confined spaces
• Recoil from firing can throw a man off balance
• Misfire not all cartridges are 100% reliable, especially if not stored correctly

HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS

• Only to be used by trained persons authorized in writing to do so
• Read makers instructions carefully before using gun
• Make sure tool is NOT LOADED before handling
• Always load the tool with barrel pointing in a safe direction - away form you and anyone else in the area
• Never place you hand over the end of the barrel
• Never walk around with a loaded cartridge tool - load at the point of use
• Check that the material into which the bolt is to fixed is suitable
• Allow at least 75mm from the edges of concrete or brickwork
• Hold the tool at right angles to the job when firing
• Wear eye and ear protection
• In the event of a misfire - wait a minute before unloading
• Keep the cartridge tool clean and lubricated
• Never leave a cartridge tool loaded when not in use
• Cartridges are to be kept under lock and key in a safe place
