WORKING WITH COMPRESSED AIR TOOLS
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Compressed air is delivered at high pressures. If it enters the body it can rupture internal organs and cause death. Any form of horseplay should be expressly forbidden under all circumstances. Tools with compressed air include concrete breakers, rock drills, air grinders, tampers and wood borers.
HAZARDS
- Noise from damaged or fractured hoses
- Vibration, particularly from concrete breakers
- Damage to hoses through over-tightening or abuse causing the line to break
- 'Snaking' of air line if unintentionally disconnected or broken
- 'Blow off' of line if incorrectly fitted
HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS
- See that the hose is clear of dirt or moisture before starting work
- Ensure that tools are regularly maintained and serviced and that matching connectors are used
- See that, where applicable, the proper protective guard is correctly fitted before use
- Always check your hose connections before starting work
- Wear protective footwear when using paving breakers and stand with your feet apart
- Wear eye protection, and use ear protectors also in accordance with the noise assessment
- Before disconnecting any air tool, turn off the compressor air supply on the main air pipe to which your hose is connected. The air should be exhausted in the line at the tool end
- The air tool control laver should be released before moving the tool to another piece of work. Use quick release control and not spring levers
- The changing of points (jack hammer) should be undertaken with the tool in a horizontal position. Do not use blunt points
- Ensure the points (jack hammer) are securely seated before operating tool
- In the case of air operated cutting wheels or discs, only operators in possession of a certificate of training are permitted to change an abrasive wheel or disc
- Report any defects immediately
- Keep away all persons not directly involved in the activity
- Whip-checks must be used on all hoses above 19mm
- Limited number of hoses connected
QUSTIONS
- Where should you shut off the air when changing or disconnecting a tool?
- Which position should a jack hammer be in when changing the point?
- What PPE must be worn when operating impact breaking tools?
SAFETY REMINDER
Turn off the air at its source before changing tools. Use whip-checks on hoses of 20mm and up.
