BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Wheeled loaders have bucket sizes from 0.5m3 to 10m3. On most construction sites the average is around 3m3. Some wheeled loaders (such as JCB's) double up as loader/excavators. The operator must hold certificates for most types of wheeled loader.

HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS

• Be aware of the dangers of loading from a heap (heap stability alters as material is moved)
• Be alert to the danders of materials falling from the opposite side of the vehicle being loaded
• Always keep a sharp lookout for other persons working in and around the area of operation
• Never travel with the bucket in the raised position, loader or empty
• Hazard reversing lights/audible horn must be fitted to machine and are working
• Ensure that when maintenance work is being carried out requiring the bucket to be raised, that the correct hydraulic ram supports are in place
• Check ground conditions before commencing work - find out the position of any underground services in the working area
• Look out for obstructions at all times, especially overhead cables
• Always look in the direction of travel
• Ensure that the load is secure before permitting the machine to move off
• Keep the loading area clear and level
• Always approach the edge of a face or stockpile at right angles
• Always retain a mound of material above the tip/discharge edge
• Carry out maintenance as required by the Planned Preventative Maintenance Scheme to keep machine in good working order

SAFETY REMINDER

Be aware of all going on around your area of work. If working with a signal man is sure you understand his signals and directions. Take care when handling hazardous substances - diesel/oils etc.
