EXCAVATOR OPERATORS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

360º Excavators can be tracked mounted or wheeled (rubber ducks). 180º Excavators (ie JCB's) are all wheeled. Operators must hold CITB certificates and only use machines that they have been trained and authorized to use. See that the machine is serviceable and correctly maintained at all times.

HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS

• Check ground conditions before commencing work - find out the position of any underground services in the working area
• Look out for obstructions at all times, especially overhead cables
• Never carry passengers in the cab - it is illegal
• With 360º machines be certain of your clearance when slewing (min 600mm of any fixed structure/tipper lorry, etc.)
• Never use a machine without full cab protection
• Be aware of others working close by, use signal men where necessary
• Do not use the machine as a crane without the relevant certification and authorization. If used as a crane ensure that it has the correct safety features to be used as a crane this only applies to loads in excess of 1 ton
• Know the weight, capacity and capability of the machine. Be aware of company or site preventative maintenance sheme, report procedures in the event of breakdowns and operators responsibility for daily/ weekly checks as required by the maintenance scheme
• Before loading any vehicle/plant ensure that the operator is off the vehicle/plant, unless there is special protection fitted
• Always lower the bucket to the ground and make sure the brakes and safety locks are on before leaving the machine at any time
• Always ensure buckets, booms or jibs are supported when raised for maintenance
• Be sure to understand all signals and work directions given

SAFETY REMINDER

Be aware of all going on around your area of work. If working with a signal man is sure you understand his signals and directions. Take care when handling hazardous substances - diesel/oils etc.
