PORTABLE ELECTRIC TOOLS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Portable electric equipment and cables are subject to harsh conditions and rough use. Equipment is likely to be damaged and may become dangerous. Modern double insulated tools are well protected, but thier cables and plugs are still vulnerable to damage and should be regularly checked. It is essential that the type of equipment selected is suitable for its use on a construction site, and that any restrictions on use given by the manufacturer are followed. All electrical operated tools should be used on a reduced voltage of 100V to avoid, as far as possible, the risk of a lethal shock.

HAZARDS

  • Electric shock and being thrown from a height (ie work on scaffold) or untested - using damaged equipment
  • Flying debris from circular saws, drills and cut-off wheels
  • Noise which is more likely to be generated by the process rather than the tool
  • Extension leads forming trip hazards
  • Dust from cutting concrete etc
  • Using tools in hostile environment

HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS

Before Use

  • Check for double insulation marks and BS 2769
  • Check the tool is fitted with the correct plug and cable
  • Check that the lead is not cut or frayed and that it is effectively clamped at the entry to the tool and plug
  • Check that there are no cracks or pieces missing from the tool casing
  • Check that all screws are in place and secure
  • Check that the number of power tools on each circuit/transformer/generator is not exceeded

During Use

  • Do discounnect the tool before adjusting
  • Do disconnect the tool when not in use
  • Do report any defects immediately
  • Do keep the tool clean and free from damp
  • Do wear appropriate protective equipment - goggles, ear protectors, helmet etc
  • Do not carry the tool by its cable
  • Do not start or stop tools when under load
  • Make sure the extension lead is long enough without straining it
  • Never stand on a damp or wet surface when using electrical equipment
  • Never connect portable electrical equipment to a lighting socket
  • Electrical power tools should be regularly inspected and maintained by a competent person at least every three months
  • Keep power cables off the floor, they may become damaged or trip somebody

QUSTIONS

  • What voltage is used on this site?
  • What intial checks must we carry out before using an electrical tools?
  • What does the double insulation symbol look like?
  • How frequently must a competent person inspect an electrical power tool?

SAFETY REMINDER

Electricity is a Killer, respect it at all times
