BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Every year people are injured and killed when loose clothing is caught in machinery. People lose fingers when rings are caught during lifting operations. Protective clothing is provided for your protection but for it to work it must be worn properly.

HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS

• Avoid loos clothing at all times, keep it fastened or zipped up
• Avoid loose ends and torn material on your work clothing
• Remove rings when working on moving machinery or carrying out lifting operations
• Always keep clothes clean. Dirty clothes can present dermatitis of fire risk
• Remove contaminated clothing immediately and wash
• Do not take problems home
• A safety helmet will protect your head. Since safety helmets were made mandatory it is estimated they have save 70 lives
• Safety footwear saves feet and toes from being crushed or amputated
• Safety footwear may require steel midsoles if there a high risk of injury either way footwear must have strong soles
• Gloves will protect your hands but they must be the right glove for the job
