BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The banksman is more important than the driver when his machine is moving, he must treat his job most seriously and maintain diligence at all times

HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS

• The safe banking of machines is very important
• Machines cover Cranes, Rigs, Dumpers, Forklifts, Concrete Lorries and any other site traffic
• The banksmen and any assistants should be at least 18 year old, trained and competent
• Try to avoid travelling over uneven or broken ground and across slopes
• Check the route before commencing movement. This should include slopes, overhead and underground services, gates, arches and any other fixed or temporary objects
• Try and avoid travelling with suspended loads
• When travelling with a suspended load "creep speed"must be used, and the load kept as closed to the ground as possible
• Always halt the machine before derricking, hoisting, lowering or slewing
• Use only clear recognized signals. Stand where you can be clearly seen and where you can properly observe the operation. the use of high visibility clothing is recommended
• When tipping over the edge of an excavation use a "stop block"
• Never allow a gap of less than 600 mm between the slewing part of a machine and other objects. If this is not prossible the working area must be properly protected or observed at all times
• No site transport may be permitted to reverse without the guidance of a banksman
• Ensure all holes are protected by adequate cover
