BACKGROUND INFORMATION

HSE(https://www.hse.gov.uk/) reports how that 25% of plant and vehicle related accidents involved reversing vehicles, clearly this is one of the greatest risks that you are exposed to on or near a construction site. Many other reversing accidents do not result in injury but cause costly damage to vehicles, equipment and premises

HAZARDS

  • Reversing vehicle or plant hitting
  • Personnel, other vehicles or structures
  • Hidden ground conditions causing vehicles or plant to shed load
  • Poorly maintained vehicles or plant, with particular reference to mirrors, horn and audible/visible warning alarms

HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS
  • Consider a designated, well signed one way system to avoid the need for vehicles/plant to reverse, wherever possible
  • No vehicles or plant must be allowed to reverse on site unless the operator has clear unobstructed vision or a Banksman provided to give guidance
  • All Banksman must be trained for the task, and should be clearly identified to plant operators
  • Banksman shall use a clear, agreed system of signalling and inform the operator of all hazards in the area i.e. ground conditions, overhead powerlies
  • Never cross at the rear of a reversing vehicle, as the driver may not have seen you
  • Signal man must position themselves so that they are not put at rist from the opssibility of materials falling from vehicles or plant or form the vehicle or plant itself, therefore a signal man should never stand behind a reversion vehicle
  • The operator of any vehicle or plant is responsible for, ensuring the safety of the vehicle or plant, all warnings to be working correctly i.e. audible, visual and mirrors to be kept clean
  • If you are not a signal man do not give signals to an operator, unless an emergency. Raising both hands with palms facing forward indicates the emergency stop signal
  • The operator or a reversing vehicle or plant must keep the signal man in constant visual contact and must stop when he/she connot see the banksman
  • Where vehicles/plant reverse up to structures or edges, barriers or wheel stops can be used to warn operators that they are at the limit of their safe reversing area
  • Banksman must not leave the area of their responsibility until the operation has ceased of another authorised Banksman relieves them
  • Always wear the high visibility clothing provided.  Clothing of a different colour may distinguish a Banksman from an operative.
