BACKGROUND INFORMATION

There are many hazards involved with welding operations, they can range from the gases being used to the type of welding and ultimately through to the piece being worked on. What is important is that all the relevant hazards are understood and that proper controls are in place

HAZARDS

• The use of flammables gases
• Hot work in confined areas
• Fumes and toxic gases from welding operations that may cause respiratory problems and poisoning
• Ultraviolet light which can damage eyes
• Noise levels

HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS

• Any work in confined areas must only be carried out under a permit
• Always use flashback always be upright and secured
• Gas cylinders should always be upright and secured
• Good housekeeping in vital to reduce the risk of fire
• Make sure that the position of the nearest fire point is known and always have an extinguisher in the general working area
• Welding is a skilled job and should only be undertaken by competent authorized people
• Don't leave hoses or cables where they could get damaged
• Do not use oxygen to ventilate confined spaces
• If you need to wear a respirator due to the production of fume, make sure the respirator is fit for use and worn correctly
• Don't weld material that is covered in oils or solvents
• Ensure electric welding equipment is earthed correctly
• Whilst electric welding don't touch live metal parts with bare skin or wet clothing
• Never use any welding equipment that is defective ie. Leaking cylinder or damaged cables etc.
